There are three considerations that you should make when incorporating text services for your business systems. Skip these steps, and you'll likely fail to move the right numbers, annoy your subscribers, and waste money. Working through these 3 suggestions won't take long. The time spent will save you some headaches down the road.
1. CREATE TEXT MESSAGE MARKETING S.M.A.R.T. GOALS
Knowing how to create goals is almost as important as setting them. When setting goals think of them as a leg in the journey to a destination. Having long-term “big picture” goals is the final destination in the journey of achieving the declared goals. The S.M.A.R.T. criteria is commonly associated with Peter Drucker’s management by objectives concept. I have adapted the model to business consulting.
Specific – target a specific area for improvement. What is the purpose of the campaign? What are the avatars?
Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress. Determine how you will measure success in the campaign.
Attainable – achievable but challenging to reach. The conversion rate for your campaign will, of course, depend on the strength of your brand, the offer, and your market.
Related – Related to all your dreams and ambitions. Make sure that the goals of your text marketing campaign align with the overarching goals of the business.
Time-frame – specify when the result(s) can be achieved. Give yourself a deadline.

2. CREATE RELEVANT TEXT CONTENT
Creating relevant marketing content should apply to all your campaigns and text message marketing is no different. Every time a text goes out, it’s notifying someone immediately. The tolerance level for unwanted messages goes down relative to the intimacy of the messaging channel. You can expect that level to be very low with text messaging.
Your subscribers have opted-in to text messages from you which means they're very interested in your messages. Don't blow it by sending “Have a great day!” texts. Send something of value every time. If you don't have something to send that will make your subscribers lives better, don't schedule the message.
3. STICK TO YOUR STRATEGY AND DON’T OVER DO IT
It can be easy to get excited when a campaign is effective in converting to new business. Once you have determined your text messaging frequency, stick to it. For instance, your subscription confirmation might read: Pick a frequency that makes sense for the kinds of updates you intend to send. An insurance agency might send home maintenance tips once a month, whereas a fitness gym might send inspirational messages every day to keep contacts motivated to work out. Once your subscribers have told you the frequency in which they would like to be contacted stick to it and you will keep your contact list growing a reduce the attrition rate.
